New interactive trails celebrates pencil-making history

The Stapleford Pencil Trail encapsulates 111 years of Stapleford’s pencil making heritage into an interactive, family friendly trail through the Nottinghamshire town.

Trail-goers can collect a map from Stapleford Library before searching for the eight ‘Pencil Heroes’ displayed at participating businesses along the high street. Each stop has a QR code which allows users to delve deeper into Stapleford’s past, discover more about the Chamber’s Pencils factory, and see photos, videos and stories from the factory submitted by local families.

Prizes can be collected from the final stop for those eager explorers that collect all eight ‘Pencil Hero’ stickers.

The trail will be available through the summer and school holidays ahead of the completion of the Pencil Works enterprise hub this autumn.

Portfolio holder for Economic Development and Asset Management, Councillor Milan Radulovic MBE, said: “The Stapleford Pencil Trail is a fantastic way for people to learn more about Stapleford’s history, and the Chamber’s Pencils factory where many locals worked for years, with many current residents having links to the factory through family members.

“Blending the town’s heritage with today’s high street, this initiative encourages visitors to not only immerse themselves in Stapleford’s past but invest in its future by increasing footfall along the high street and supporting some wonderful independent businesses.

“I hope that many of our residents will take the opportunity to enjoy some fresh air, pleasant weather, and complete the trail this summer.”

Mayor of the East Midlands, Claire Ward said: “Projects like the Stapleford Pencil Trail show why local funding matters. It celebrates our heritage while bringing people together and supports our high streets. It also helps build pride in place and keeps our towns vibrant and welcoming.

“Backing community projects and businesses with this funding supports economic growth and ensures our places can continue to attract visitors and investment in their own right.”

Chamber Pencils operated in Stapleford from 1915 to 1973, growing into a major manufacturer and global brand, which employed hundreds from the local area. Today they still operate in the town under the name UK Pencils.
