Residents across West Devon will have more opportunities to walk, wheel and cycle as part of a new 12-month programme being delivered by Active Devon.
The initiative has been funded to help people of all ages feel more confident travelling actively, whether walking to school, cycling to the shops or getting outdoors for leisure.
Research shows that concerns about safety and confidence are among the biggest barriers preventing people from choosing active forms of travel. The new programme was designed to address those challenges by providing practical support, training and local activities.
The programme will be delivered across West Devon’s towns and rural communities and will include walkability training in 10 primary schools, helping children develop essential road safety and pedestrian skills; support for existing wellbeing walking groups, including training for new volunteer walk leaders and opportunities for more people to get involved; two new wellbeing walks, including a planned new group in Okehampton; and additional free cycle confidence sessions for adults, delivered through Active Devon’s partnership with Libraries Unlimited.
Activities will be tailored to local communities and delivered with local partners in accessible venues.
Hub lead for health and community wellbeing, Councillor Jane Elliott, said: “We want more people in West Devon to feel confident choosing to walk, wheel or cycle for everyday journeys. This programme is about providing practical support and helping residents discover opportunities that are already available in their communities.
“We’re excited to be working with Active Devon and hope lots of people will get involved and give it a try.”
Hannah Worth, director at Active Devon, said: “We’re delighted to be working with West Devon Borough Council on this programme. Walking, wheeling and cycling can make a real difference to people’s health, wellbeing and independence.
“We want to help more people feel confident getting active in ways that fit into everyday life, whether that’s travelling locally, meeting new people or spending more time outdoors. We’re looking forward to working with schools, libraries, community groups and residents across West Devon over the coming year.”
