A long-distance trail that connects Chicago in Illinois to New Buffalo, Michigan, is taking shape.
This week, it was announced that the entire Michigan portion of the almost 60-mile $114m trail that includes one national park and one state park, and runs almost parallel to Lake Michigan, has been completed.
The bulk of the trail is in Indiana, with a small portion in Illinois and Michigan.
Last month, construction began at Indiana Dunes National Park on a segment of the Marquette Greenway Trail. This segment is located between the national park’s Paul H. Douglas Center for Environmental Education in Gary and the entrance to the park’s West Beach in Portage.
Work on the nearly three-mile-long section of paved trail is is expected to last through the end of 2025. The trailheads at Grand Boulevard, Montgomery Street, and County Line Road will be closed during construction for visitor safety.
