Salt Lake County in Utah has further committed to expanding recreational opportunities and its trail network by agreeing to the purchase of a major parcel that will enhance Bonneville Shoreline Trail connections across the county foothills.
Salt Lake County Council approved Mayor Wilson’s proposal of $180,000 for the critical area to fill a nearly five-mile gap in the trail system spanning the county’s east side.
“The goal of a complete and connected Bonneville Shoreline Trail has been a longstanding priority since I first began service to Salt Lake County. In the early 90s, visionary leaders identified the opportunity to develop a contiguous trail system for all to enjoy. We are closer to a complete trail with no gaps because of this purchase,” said Salt Lake County Mayor Jenny Wilson.
The Bonneville Shoreline Trail corridor traces the edges of ancient Lake Bonneville, with sections of the route naturally defined by the former shoreline. The trail system accommodates a variety of activities, including hiking, biking, running, and, in designated areas, horseback riding.
The 60-acre property, located at 3085 East Sherwood Drive, is just south of the mouth of Emigration Canyon, at the top of the St. Mary’s neighbourhood area.
This open space opportunity is supported by the Salt Lake County Open Space Trust Fund Advisory Board, Salt Lake City Trails and Natural Lands, Bonneville Shoreline Trail Committee, and Trails Utah.
