The European Hiking Association (ERA) was founded in Germany in 1969. The ERA consists of about 60 member hiking organisations from about 30 European countries and is a uniting force that is committed to hiking as a leisure activity and as a means of connecting and promoting nature and culture throughout the continent.
The ERA mission focuses on promoting networking and cross-border cooperation between its member organisations.
In 2000/2001, the ERA organised the first pan-European event: EURORANDO 2001. The event is staged every five years in coordination with the ERA.
The event for the first time crosses borders, as it focuses on the Erzgebirge/Krušnohoří mining region, in Germany and Czechia, which was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2019 and is one of the few binational sites in Europe.
