The history and heritage of Sheerness and Blue Town in Kent is being revealed thanks to a new walking route.

Swale Borough Council awarded Sheerness Town Council £10,000 from its government funded Town Centre Action Grant (TAG) to create an interactive heritage walk from The Old Courthouse ending at the SS Montgomery.

The route, the Sheerness and Blue Town Heritage Walk, highlights things like the Dockyard Church, Criterion Theatre, Rose Street Cottage and aims to bring in more people to the high street and support local businesses.

Locals and visitors can read about the historical importance of each marked stop as they walk through the town.

The grant funded the development and creation of the route, way finding, the design and printing of leaflets and the creation of a website.

There was also an opening event where local school children got to experience the walk for the first time, learning about the rich history of their area.

The town council said it hopes people will get out of their cars, stay local and support the high street, while enjoying a healthy, free and accessible activity.

Cllr Dolley Wooster, chair of Sheerness Town Council, said: “Sheerness Town Council are very pleased to be working with Swale Borough Council in providing a new attraction for Sheerness residents and visitors to enjoy.

“The walk spans the entire town and has a lovely seaside walk included.  We hope you enjoy your time in Sheerness and make great use of the other really special elements of the town including Swales new adventure golf and the historic high street. Sheerness is full of small business and organisations that add to the unique offer in Sheerness. We have an excellent train service that means that everything you need for a great day out is in walking distance.”

The Town Centre Action Grants scheme has received funding from the UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund.
