A family nature walk, music workshop and an evening bat walk are just some of the highlights in this year’s expanded Somer Valley Walking Festival, which runs from Friday, September 6 to Sunday, September 8.

The festival is hosted by Somer Valley Rediscovered in collaboration with the Somer Valley Ramblers.

On Saturday, September 7, the activity walks include forest bathing, led by Luke Newman, practical plants and their uses, headed by Steve England, and foraging and making syrups, being run by Leah Apostolou.

On Sunday, September 8, the Ramblers will guide a series of walks including leisurely three-mile strolls and longer hikes, including a 14-mile walk, across fields, valleys, and old railway lines allowing walkers to experience nature, heritage, and scenic views. All the walks start from the Somer Centre in Midsomer Norton.

Also on Sunday, there will be a creative well-being photography walk from The Active Way.

This year several new audio trails will be launched to encourage people to undertake self-guided walks around the area.

Councillor Sarah Warren, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Climate Emergency and Sustainable Travel, said: “The walking festival provides a fantastic opportunity to explore the beautiful Somer Valley area. Whether you’re an avid walker or just looking for a fun and engaging weekend activity with your family, this festival has something for everyone. Participants will have the chance to immerse themselves in the natural beauty and rich history and biodiversity of the area, making new friends and learning from knowledgeable guides along the way.”

The full programme, and booking information, can be viewed on the Somer Valley Rediscovered website.
