This autumn, the Saltmarsh Coast Walking Festival in Essex will help residents and visitors explore more of the area, with 42 free guided walks from 25 September to 4 October 2026.
The area includes countryside paths and historic villages to coastal views and internationally important wildlife habitats.
The 10-day festival offers opportunities to experience different parts of the district, from family-friendly walks and heritage trails to longer countryside and coastal routes. A programme of evening events will also celebrate the people, history and culture of the Saltmarsh Coast.
Leader of Maldon District Council, Cllr Simon Morgan, said: “The Saltmarsh Coast is one of the district’s greatest assets, and this festival is a fantastic way for people to discover more of what makes it so special. Whether you’re exploring a new walking route, visiting one of our villages for the first time or enjoying the beautiful coastline, the festival helps people connect with the places, landscapes and communities that make this area unique.
“We know that getting out in the fresh air and walking in open spaces is good for both your physical health and mental wellbeing so to do this along some of the best coastal walks in the country is fantastic. The festival also supports local businesses by encouraging people to spend time in our towns and villages, helping local cafés, pubs, shops and attractions welcome new visitors. We are proud to support an event that showcases the very best of Maldon District.”
Chris Harvey, organiser of the Saltmarsh Coast Walking Festival, said: “We’re grateful for the support of Maldon District Council and the Government’s UK Shared Prosperity Fund in helping us bring the festival back this year.
“The festival is all about encouraging people to get out and explore, whether that’s discovering a new village, learning something new about the area’s history or simply enjoying the beauty of the Saltmarsh Coast.”
The festival also highlights the landscapes, wildlife, heritage, communities and businesses that make the Saltmarsh Coast a popular destination throughout the year.
All walks are free, however places on many guided walks are limited. The programme includes full details of the festival’s events and booking information.
