Parrot marks newest Oxfordshire trail

A new character has joined the animals that decorate the streets of Kidlington in Oxfordshire as part of the local council’s zoo trail walking routes.

The UK government has funded the project through Cherwell District Council’s share of the Rural England Prosperity Fund. Thanks to this grant, Kidlington has seen its longest walking route installed, with purple claw prints marking the way.

The choice of a new mascot was a community affair, with local children invited to vote for their favourite animal and name. Following a competition at Kidlington library, local children chose a parrot as the mascot for the trail.

It was unveiled during Kidlington Gala day, and nearly 200 visitors voted to name the newest rainbow-coloured trail guide Skittles.

Councillor Rob Pattenden, Portfolio Holder for Healthy Communities, said: “The zoo trails we have lining the paths across Kidlington are extremely popular with children and adults alike. They provide a brilliant way for families to get out of the house, into the fresh air and explore the village together.

“Walking is a brilliant and easy way to get more active. A brisk walk each day can count towards the recommended 150 minutes of weekly exercise. I would encourage people to check out our zoo trails, with a choice of distances available depending on how long they want to walk for.”

The new parrot trail joins the five existing routes marked out by footprints and fun activities, like hopscotch, jumping pads and running challenges. The purple claw prints will cover 8.5km and some of Kidlington’s outer areas, including Garden City, Stratfield Brake and Gosford.

A new map has been added to the council website, which outlines the new parrot route alongside the elephant, monkey, lion, big bear and bear cub paths.
