The Municipality of Agios Nikolaos, through the Municipal Company of Agios Nikolaos (DAEAN), is continuing its efforts to develop and upgrade the hiking network of the municipality, enhancing opportunities to explore and discover the natural and cultural environment of the area.
Agios Nikolaos is on the north-east coast of Crete, in the regional unit of Lasithi. It’s a tourist town on the Gulf of Mirabello, about 65km east of Heraklion.
As part of the work carried out, maintenance and renewal of signage on existing routes has been completed, and new hiking routes have been added to the network: T11 (Rainides), T12 (Pano Louma – Katselios), T14 (Asfentami – Damaka), T15 (Kritsa – Lato – Agios Nikolaos), and T16 (The Beaches).
With these additions, the hiking network of the Municipality of Agios Nikolaos now totals approximately 190 kilometres of signposted routes, offering residents and visitors the opportunity to discover unique landscapes, significant monuments, and authentic corners of the area through a distinctive hiking experience.
The development and promotion of the trails forms part of a broader strategy to support alternative forms of tourism, promote gentle and sustainable tourism development, connect people with nature, and highlight the cultural identity of the area.
