The contribution of Thomas Cook, founder of modern tourism, is set to be recognised with a new statue and heritage trail in Market Harborough.
The statue will be installed by Harborough District Council in the Friendship Park on Northampton Road, celebrating one of the town’s most notable historical figures and strengthening Market Harborough’s connection to its history.
To mark the occasion, the park will be renamed Thomas Cook Friendship Park, creating a lasting tribute to his contribution to the development of modern tourism.
Located close to Market Harborough railway station, the statue will commemorate the town where Cook lived and developed the ideas that helped shape the future of travel. It will provide a focal point for residents and visitors.
Market Harborough played a pivotal role in Cook’s story. It was during a 15-mile walk from his home in the town to Leicester in June 1841 that he conceived the idea of using the emerging railway network to organise group travel. That inspiration led to the first organised rail excursion the following month and laid the foundations for what would become modern package tourism.
The statue will also serve as the starting point for a new heritage trail, encouraging people to discover the locations associated with Cook’s life and work.
A series of specially designed suitcase markers will guide visitors to key locations linked to Cook’s legacy, helping tell the story of the man who transformed modern travel while showcasing Market Harborough’s historic character and independent businesses.
An interpretation panel, digital content accessed via QR codes and enhanced landscaping will further enrich the visitor experience, creating an attractive destination that celebrates the town’s story and supports the local economy.
The project is being funded through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, with additional support from Business Rate Economic Development funding.

This project celebrates an important part of our history while creating a new attraction that will encourage more people to visit, learn about our heritage and support our local businesses.”
