While the weather in Scotland can be unpredictable at best, the scenery more than makes up for it. East Lothian, the county just to the east of Edinburgh, includes some beautiful coastal walks, as well as inland hills, small lochs and castles.
The county is hosting East Lothian Walkfest from August 24 to September 1 with a range of events and walks.
The event kicks off with three events at 10am on Saturday, August 24. There is a four-mile Prestonpans Mural trail, a Remembering Together walk in Tranent, and a two-hour introduction to nature journaling walk starting from Butterdean Wood car park.
Scotland in the Caribbean is an interesting two-hour walk starting in North Berwick that looks at the geology of the region, and how Scotland looked millions of years ago.
North Berwick is the venue again on Monday for a local history walk; also on Monday there are health and wellness walks, as well as walking football and netball.
There are six walks on Tuesday, including themed walks on photography and a Battle of Prestonpans guided walk. Wednesday’s events includes a walk and reservoir swim, and there are plenty more walks on Thursday, as well as walking hockey and an RNIB welcome walk.
Events conclude with several walks on Sunday, September 1, including a 14-mile hike from Traprain Law to North Berwick Law, which features some spectacular views of the entire area, including Edinburgh, Bass Rock and the Fife Coast. Unless it’s foggy.
